Strategically Plan Your Courses and Course Schedule
Don't simply take whatever classes are available. Talk to upperclassmen and older brothers who have taken the same courses. Ask them which professors are most effective and which courses you should take early or late in your college career. Be strategic — limit yourself to 12 credit hours in your first quarter until you understand the expectations and workload at the college level.
Learn to Write Better — Take Courses That Challenge You to Write
Your grades in college will depend significantly on how well you write. Take courses that push you to write essays, research papers, and arguments. The ability to communicate clearly in writing is one of the most valuable skills you can develop — for your career and for life.
Start Projects and Papers Immediately
As soon as a paper or project is assigned, begin working on it. Even spending 30 minutes on day one gives you a head start. Procrastination is the enemy of quality work. Starting early also gives you time to consult professors, visit the writing center, and revise your drafts.
Take the Time to Meet Other Students and Really Get to Know Them
Your peers are among your greatest resources. Build genuine relationships with classmates in your major. Study together, share notes, and support each other. The network you build in college will serve you for decades.
Find a Mentor
Seek out a professor, alumni member, or upperclassman who can guide you. A great mentor will provide perspective, introduce you to opportunities, and help you avoid common pitfalls. Don't wait for a mentor to find you — be proactive.
Understand Your Professor's Particular Emphasis
Every professor has a unique focus and style. Early in the quarter, ask questions, read the syllabus carefully, and try to understand what they value most — whether that's participation, written work, exams, or projects. Tailor your effort accordingly.
Consider Retaking Certain Foundational Courses
If you took a course as an AP class in high school and didn't fully master the material, consider retaking it at EWU. A solid foundation in core subjects like calculus, writing, or economics will pay dividends throughout your degree.
Participate in a Study Group for Certain Courses
For rigorous courses, study groups are extremely effective. Teaching concepts to others is one of the best ways to reinforce your own understanding. Choose study partners who are serious about the material.
Engage with Your Professors
Go to office hours — not just when you're struggling, but when you're doing well too. Ask for old exams early in the quarter. Professors appreciate engaged students and are far more likely to help you when they know you're invested in their class.
